I don't know if this horse was 'put out to pasture', but it seemed like a good title for this painting. Putting a horse out to pasture seems like a kind thing to do to an old horse, but to put a person out to pasture has a negative connotation that the person is of no use anymore. I love how some of these old expressions are still in use today. Some interesting ones like 'having an axe to grind', 'counting your chickens before they hatch' or 'hitting the hay'. If you're being literal not many people have axes in their homes, chickens in the yard or hay in their mattresses.
